WVPT announces “reading rainbow” young writers and illustrators contest winners
Sixteen students in grades K - 3 in the WVPT viewing area are winners of the public television stations’s 2005 “Reading Rainbow” Young Writers and Illustrators Contest. The reception was held on May 5 at the station in Harrisonburg.
The annual contest is designed to encourage a love of writing in young children. For the contest, students in grades K-3 are asked to write an original story and include original illustrations. Margot Bergman was born into an artistic family and has followed this path from an early age, making art and also teaching art and aesthetics at the university level. She works in many media, often illustrating relationships between people and a connection with spirit and nature.
Joanne Gabbin is a published author and the editor of several poetry collections. She directs the Honors Program and the Furious Flower Poetry Center at James Madison University and owns the Franklin Street Gallery in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
The children’s book I Bet She Called Me Sugar Plum is the collaborative effort of Bergman and Gabbin, with a foreword by Lucille Clifton. The book is their testament to reflections on their own upbringings, the memories they cherish of their mothers, and the joy they have experienced as parents.
The animated stories were read by local children: Sydney Barbato, Dakota Thomsen-Diggs and Mario Cruz. Two past winners served as judges this year: Forest Thomsen-Diggs, who received the first place award two years ago when he was in the third grade; and Carolyn Wakeman, who received the first place award last year when she was in the third grade. Additional judges came from the education community.
All contest entrants received a participation certificate signed by “Reading Rainbow” series host LeVar Burton. Each winner received prizes and recognition from WVPT.
All first-place stories were read and animated in a video to be broadcast on WVPT. The first place winners’ stories will represent the WVPT viewing area in the national competition for the “Reading Rainbow” Young Writers and Illustrators Contest.
