Theater Shenandoah ‘reaches for the stars’ with August performaces
by Kathy Ackerson

Theater Shenandoah’s upcoming Cabaret performances on August 5, 6, and 7 highlight songs from prior productions, cast member favorites, and musical numbers built around this year’s program focus - ‘Reach for the Stars.’

More importantly, it highlights performers who have contributed hundreds of prior production hours to this community theater group.  “The Cabaret format is a fun way for us to raise much-needed funds to continue our theater renovations, and our cast members get to relax a bit; everyone gets to sing and dance, and they don’t have any lines to memorize!” commented Barbara Strong, Theater Shenandoah Artistic Director.

Led by Ms. Strong, Theater Shenandoah is a relatively new outgrowth of her prior community theater work under the auspices of VECCA.  Theater Shenandoah formed as a separate organization in March 2004, and has mounted several productions—The Wizard of Oz, The Honey House, and The Sound of Music since then.  Last year’s Cabaret fundraising event was held in the Old Edinburg Mill’s bar—unfortunately, attendance was severely limited by size.  This year’s production will be held in the Old Opera House, which the Town of Edinburg has graciously provided for the Theater’s use.  “We were totally sold out last year,” said Ms. Strong, “and we are excited to have more space for our audiences in our new home.”

Theater company members spent much of April and May to renovate, paint, and build better stage facilities in the building, which formerly housed the Edinburg Museum and a local Teen Center, among other uses.  Once the Edinburg Museum relocates to its permanent home in the Mill, there will be additional space to house a growing collection of props, scenery, costumes, and other Theater Shenandoah paraphernalia.  High on the list of much-needed improvements are air-conditioning, an upgraded heating system, and restroom renovations.  Theater Shenandoah has applied for tax-exempt status, and always welcomes donations and support of any kind.

New members are always welcome—drama camps this summer and music workshops for infants and toddlers ensure that there is a continuing stream of Shenandoah County participants for upcoming Theater activities. Even if you can’t act, sing or dance, Theater Shenandoah can provide an outlet—costume production, scenery painting, lighting, ticket and snack bar sales are all areas where volunteers are welcome.

Cabaret members are working hard to bring audiences a fun and enjoyable evening of Broadway show tunes and popular favorites.  Complimentary food and beverages will be served for a relaxing evening. Reach for the Stars will be performed at the Opera House in Edinburg on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, August 5, 6, and 7, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.  Admission costs are $16 single and $30 per couple. Call (540) 984-8076 or (540) 477-9514 to make reservations.
