Fair officials say 2005 was a successful year
by Joe Farruggia
Despite some hot days that delayed some of the children's activities, and threats of rain over the weekend, the 48th Annual Warren County Fair was pronounced a success by fair officials.
"This was a very successful fair," said Joye Wood, president of the Warren County Fair Association. "We had 280 exhibitors this year, and that was way up over previous years."
Both Wood and Fair Association vice president Tom Eshelman said attendance was down somewhat for this year's entertainment, but up in attendance at the midway.
"Our carnival midway attendance was up more than 40 percent this years, which tells us that parents are bringing their kids out to the fair," Eshelman said during a fair update he gave to the Front Royal Rotary Club last week.
Overall, total attendance at the fair was expected to be about the same as last year, which peaked at 18,000, Wood said.
Both Wood and Eshelman said the addition of a second Demolition Derby boosted attendance this year, along with the return of racing pigs, which were absent from the fair last year.
"The bleachers at both events were packed for every show," Eshelman said.
New features also drew crowds, including a high-jumping mule, the electric bull and the first Hershey's Cocoa Classic Chocolate baking contest.
"Everyone had a good time," said Wood.
The Warren Sentinel's wrap up coverage of the fair begins on page B1 with photos and on continues on page B5 with the list of exhibit winners; pages B8 and C8 with color photos; and pages D6 and D& with photos of this year's winners of the annual Warren County Fair pageants.
The 4-H awards and thelist of winners of the various 4-H livestock shows and the annual 4-H livestock auction, along with photos, will appear in next week's issue.
