Should Minnesota return a captured Confederate flag to Virginia?
by CLE Rinker

Last week we asked if you think the Confederate flag that has been kept in Minnesota since the Civil War should be returned to the state of Virginia. The majority of those participating - 69% - said yes. Here are some of your comments:

"No....can't believe that with so many important issues now going on - that a flag - which was in another war - has become so important. Wake up folks. War is war, not a game. Give it up and go on. If
Minnesota wants to return this flag - fine. If not... We are once more fighting a war and war is NOT fun... folks get hurt. Give this flag thing up and go to more important things!"

"No. We’ll get it back one day."

"Even though Minnesota captured one of our flags during a very bloody affair, (as a matter of fact, the 1st Minnesota “Iron Brigade” took one of the highest Yankee casualties during that battle), naturally, they deserved to keep it… for awhile. The War Between the States is over, so it would be a nice gesture for Minnesota to return a part of history to where it belong - at its home in Virginia."

"Yes - if the flag will be destroyed.  It is a part of history, regardless of the nature of it being captured.  It should be preserved and used as a part of educating our society about what the Civil War was fought for."

"Yes, I hope Minnesota does not still think the war in raging. We lost but the flag is part of our history. Is the part of the reason Virginia is the way it is today. We are a very diverse State (Commonwealth) of people and ideas. I realize that that flag is also part of Minnesota's history now too, but it is also a link between us. As a show of good will and solidarity of this great Country we have become, it should be returned, where it will be proudly displayed as we remember our great losses in a very tragic part of
the American history. I'm confident that a thorough explanation of the flag's history will also be made at it's display. Minnesota should also be thanked for helping to preserve our "Proud Southern Heritage". Where ever I go I'm proud to tell them I am born and raised in Virginia!"
